Every October, people across the UK commit to giving up smoking as part of the Stoptober campaign. But what happens when you take something away? What do you put in its place?
At Arts Outburst, we believe in filling that space with something powerful, joyful, and healing: singing.
That’s why we’ve launched Breathe Easy – a new project that invites Thurrock residents to try a new approach to quitting smoking. And what better way help improve your health than by trying our Thurrock Voices Community Choir, which provides a friendly and creative environment for people looking to improve their health, reduce stress, and connect with others.
Singing: a healthier habit
Research shows that singing in a group improves lung capacity, boosts mental wellbeing, and enhances emotional resilience – all vital tools for people trying to give up smoking. Singing also encourages deep, controlled breathing and supports the regulation of the nervous system, helping people to manage stress and cravings more effectively.
“It’s not just about the music – it’s about making space for yourself and finding your voice in a supportive community,” says Daryl Branch, Artistic Director of Arts Outburst.
The Breathe Easy project will begin with a special Stoptober Carnival on Thursday 10th October at our Get Creative Space in Grays Shopping Centre. It’s an open, inclusive and stigma-free celebration of healthy choices, featuring:
- A performance from Thurrock Voices Community Choir
- Drop-in arts and crafts for all ages
- Information about stop smoking services
- Opportunities to join the choir or sign up for creative health activities
- Tea, conversation, and community spirit
Whether you’re already trying to quit or simply looking for a fresh start, Breathe Easy offers a different kind of support: one that’s grounded in creativity, connection, and self-expression.
Join us and take a deep breath. Let’s turn this Stoptober into the start of something new.
