No Place for Hate – Using Theatre to Tackle Hate Crime in Schools

by Arts Outburst on 9 October 2025

At Arts Outburst, we believe creativity can shape attitudes, build empathy and inspire change. Our powerful forum theatre production, No Place for Hate, is doing just that — tackling hate crime, prejudice and discrimination in secondary schools through performance, participation and conversation.

Funded by Basildon Pride and Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO) through their Trailblazer programme, and delivered in partnership with Essex Police, the project invites young people to step into the story and become part of the solution.

Following a highly successful tour in Basildon schools last year, No Place for Hate returns this year by popular demand — and is now available to schools across Thurrock for the first time.

Forum theatre turns audiences into active changemakers. Rather than simply watching, students can pause the performance, challenge what they see, and even step into a scene to try out their own ideas. It’s a dynamic and creative approach that gives young people the tools to recognise discrimination, stand up against hate, and promote understanding in their everyday lives.

The story follows a group of students navigating friendship, identity and belonging. What starts as casual teasing quickly escalates, forcing the characters — and the audience — to confront what hate looks like and how it spreads. By seeing these scenarios play out in real time, students can explore the consequences of silence, peer pressure and courage.

Artistic Director Daryl Branch explains:

When we piloted No Place for Hate in Basildon, the response from students and teachers was incredible. Schools told us they needed more of this kind of work — something honest, participatory and relevant. That’s why we’re bringing it back, and expanding into Thurrock through RBO’s Trailblazer programme.

Performances are followed by a facilitated discussion with the cast and school staff, giving students space to reflect and ask questions. The sessions open up honest conversations about respect, inclusion and responsibility — often revealing experiences that might otherwise go unspoken.

Arts Outburst continues to lead creative approaches to social change, using arts and culture to build safer, more connected communities. No Place for Hate embodies this mission, combining artistic excellence with meaningful impact.

Spaces are still available to book for secondary schools in Thurrock throughout the 2025/26 academic year.
